AUTOGRAM RECORDS: die Geschichte
die 1960er
Autogram als Label entstand im damaligen Konzertbüro Schwenken zunächst für die Jazzopators (die 1999 noch zu Filmmusik-Ehren kamen im TV-Zweiteiler Bubi Scholz-Story). Künstler aus Deutschland, den Niederlanden und den USA folgten in den Stilbereichen R&B, Jazz, Gospel, Blues und Songpoets. Ellingtons Nelson Williams, Harlem Ramblers, Tucker Zimmerman, und Hans Theessink (18jährig/ bis dato z.T. mit Autogram verbunden) sind auch heute noch Standards. Die Interfolk-Compilations sind heute Sammlerstücke.
die 1970er
AUTOGRAM-Records machte sich stark für weitere kulturelle Nischenbereiche. Musikerneuerungen an Brennpunkten des Abendlandes galt es zu begleiten. Aus der breiten Veröffentlichungstätigkeit stachen schon damals umsatzstark heraus: Sands Family (Nord-Irland), der unvergessene Gerry Lockran (1942-87/ Mentor von Joe Cocker), die Gruppe Fiedel Michel als Vorreiter des deutschsprachigen Folkmusik-Revivals, die Schotten Hamish Imlach, Iain Mackintosh und Ossian sowie der Australier Eric Bogle mit seinen ersten 3 LPs, deren Songs in hundertfachen Coverversionen rund um die Welt gingen. Die neue deutsche Mitmach-Volkstanzbewegung wurde mit anspruchsvollem Musik- und Unterlagenmaterial wirkungsvoll unterstützt. Folkrock-Annäherungen wurden gefördert.
die 1980er
Das Deutsch-Folk-Revival mit zahlreichen Gruppen schwappte in die neue Dekade. Dieser Katalogteil ist heute ein von Sammlern gesuchtes Zeitzeugnis, inklusive der "Nürnberger Schule", aus der schließlich die Gruppe Älabätsch mit der speziellen Mischung aus Tradition und Moderne hervorging.
Die Andenmusik der Indios wurde mit Ruphay auf eine autochtone Basis gestellt. Diese Entrümpelung fand weltweite Beachtung und macht diesen Katalogteil zeitlos. Das Trio Aka Pacha verschmolz im Jahr 2000 andine Musik mit Barockmusik. Die Edition Südindische Musik um das Ramakrishnan-Ensemble fand ebenfalls die Beachtung der Kenner. Mit Reissues des Pre-War-Blues und Neuaufnahmen noch zu Lebzeiten der nachgenannten Personalities erwuchs mit der Classic Blues-Serie ein eigenständiger "wow"-Fundus (Son House, Robert Pete Williams, Jo-Ann Kelly, Honeyboy Edwards, Furry Lewis, Little Brother Montgomery, Doctor Ross, Gareth Hedges u.a.).
die 1990er
Die CD-Zeit erforderte eine etwas andere Musik-Dramaturgie bei neuen Stilistiken! Dafür steht das Label COSTBAR. Nachgewachsenes Publikum sollte mit einer zeitgemäßen Form des Folkrock speziell für Deutschland bedient werden. Die ab 1990 vorbereiteten Sounds erwiesen sich alsbald als richtige Fährte: die Inchtabokatables wurden als Kult-Band zu einer Institution, und Subway To Sally's Erstling hat 2003 neue Bedeutung. Die Schnitter, Letzte Instanz u.a. sind weitere Trendsetter dieser deutschsprachigen New-Folk-Power. - Porf steht als Bandmusik für Musiker. Mit den neueren Labels DODO und AUTONOM werden diverse musikalische Tore aufgestoßen. Das Label EMPHASE steht für neue Minimal-Music: u.a. G. Möbius "Electronic Urban Folk" und Anne Laplantine, beide mit Zukunftsfahrschein.
seit 2001
Die Jahre des Umbruchs geht AUTOGRAM mit der notwendigen Herausforderung an. Die vorausschauende Talentarbeit trägt erste Früchte: Das Oktett Violet entwickelt einen eigenen Sound zwischen Alter Musik und einer Art Weltfolkrock und geht damit in bestuhlte Konzertsäle. Generationenübergreifende Zufriedenheit. Eine originale Leit- Popmusik-Linie.
Am 21. September 2020 verstarb der Labelgründer Willy Schwenken im Alter von 86 Jahren. In den Ruhestand gegangen ist er nie, aber in den letzten Jahren ist er altersbedingt doch deutlich kürzer getreten. Ein Nachruf erschien u.a. in der Musikwoche. Günter Gall verfasste den Nachruf im FOLKER.

Circa-Größenordnungen bei gelegentlichen Überlappungen: Blues x 60, Deutschfolk x 40, Britfolk x 40, US-Folkstyles x 30, Guitar Artistry x 20, andere europäische Länder x 15, Volkstanz meist mit Anweisungen f. d. Tanzmeister x 15, Alte Musik x 15, Deutsche Mundarten x 20, Folkrock x 15, Anden x 10, Indien x 10, Polit.-Songs/Lieder x 15, Skandinavien x 10, Celtic x 20, Singer-Songwriter x 25, Pop x 5, Rock x 15., restl. Europa/ander Erdteile x 20. Bei den meisten Acts handelt es sich um Künstler bzw. Produktionen, die inzwischen Eingang in Nachschlagewerke und/oder Fachlexika gefunden haben. Manche Scheiben wurden ausgesprochene Kultobjekte, deren Vinyl-Erstausgaben inzwischen hochpreisig gehandelt werden.
Insgesamt viele "Perlen" der All-Time-Musikszenen mit dankbaren Käufern, die das Original besitzen wollen.
AUTOGRAM RECORDS: a short history
the 1960s
The Autogram label originated in the German Booking Agency Schwenken. Originally conceived for the jazz band The Jazzopators (whose music was used only 1999 in the export soundtrack of the TV film "The Bubi Scholz Story") other R&B, Gospel, Blues artists and songpoets soon joined the label. German, Dutch, American artists such as Ellington's Nelson Williams, The Harlem Ramblers, Tucker Zimmerman, Hans Theessink (at the time only 18 years old and till now in friendly relations with Autogram) have set standards. The Interfolk-Compilations are collectors' items.
the 1970s
AUTOGRAM Records seek and find more cultural niches in times when music in Western-Europe lives to see a revival. Examples? The Sands Family (Northern Ireland), the unforgotten Gerry Lockran (1942-1987: Joe Cocker's mentor), the German Fiedel Michel Group who initiated the German folk revival, the Scots Hamish Imlach, Iain Mackintosh and Ossian, the Australian Eric Bogle, whose 3 first albums include all these famous songs, covered by hundreds by now. German folk dancing was promoted actively with new music editions. First Folkrock attempts were made.
the 1980s
The new decade starts with numerous new German folk bands. This part of the catalogue contains many sought after items, including the albums of the so called Nurnberg School, with Älabätsch's special mixture of tradition and modernism. Ruphay from Bolivia bring autochthonous Andean music to the attention. Worldwide notice was taken of their attempt to clear up Indio music, making this part of the catalogue timeless. Only in 1999 the Trio Aka Pacha melted Andean with Baroque music. With the Ramakrishnan Ensemble lovers of South-Indian music found interesting themes in the South-Indian Edition. The Classic Blues Series comprises reissues of pre-war-blues albums as well as new recordings of personalities such as Son House, Robert Pete Williams, Jo-Ann Kelly, Honeyboy Edwards, Furry Lewis, Little Brother Montgomery, Doctor Ross, Gareth Hedges a.o., a treasure altogether.
the 1990s
The CD era required a new approach: a new label was founded: COSTBAR, with German folkrock for a young audience. Soon the new sounds turned out to be the right ones: bands such as The Inchtabokatables became cultand 2003 Subway To Sally's first CD was a much demanded item. Die Schnitter, Letzte Instanz, etc. are other names in the list of German spoken New-folk-power. - The name Porf stands for a musicians' band. The new labels DODO and AUTONOM opened different musical possibilities. The label EMPHASE looks into the future with new Minimal Music as e.g. G. Möbius' "Electronic Urban Folk" and Anne Laplantine.
since 2001
In these times of change AUTOGRAM tackles the challenge.The search for fresh talent begins to bear fruit: the 8 piece band Violet develops a special sound between ancient music and a sort of world-folkrock; concerts take place in front of a seated audience of all generations. Original popmusic and a special program with church organ, saz and wind-instrument.
On 21 September 2020, label founder Willy Schwenken passed away at the age of 86. He never retired, but in recent years he did take a much shorter step due to his age. An obituary was published in Musikwoche, among others. Günter Gall wrote the obituary in FOLKER.
